Chapter Eleven

I stopped and looked over my shopping list. Mom had sent me to the grocery store to pick up food for the reception. We had a refrigerator and smaller freezer at the candy store where we could store some of it, as well as keeping some of it at our homes. Keeping the food at different locations would make preparation a little harder, but we would manage. Amanda’s wedding may have been marked by Erica’s death, but hopefully, when she looked back on the wedding and the reception, she would be able to focus on marrying Brian, the love of her life, and not the murder.

I grabbed a shopping cart and headed to the produce department. Mom and Amanda’s mom, Connie, were making green salads. Mom had already picked up large aluminum foil pans to serve it from at the reception. It may not have been elegant, but it would work.

I stood in front of the bags of salad, debating on which kind to get. In the end, I settled for mixed greens and started tossing them into my shopping cart. I was guessing about how many bags we’d need, but I’d rather have too much than too little.

“Oh, that’s a lot of salad. Hope you aren’t planning on eating all that by yourself,” a voice came from behind me.

I turned and looked. “Hi Becky,” I said with a grin. “No, I don’t think I could eat all this salad if I wanted to. And I definitely wouldn’t want to.” Becky Schrader was exactly the person I was hoping to run into at the grocery store. I knew she worked here, and I had some questions for her.

She chuckled. “Well good, I think if you ate that much salad, you’d turn green.”

“Right? Yet another reason I try to limit my salad intake. I swear it isn’t because I like junk food better,” I said and laughed. “How are you doing, Becky?”

She nodded. “I’m doing fine. What’s all the salad for?”

“Amanda Krigbaum’s wedding reception,” I said. “My mom and her mom are going to be making a ton of salad. I might be over-buying right now, but I’d rather have too much than too little.”

She nodded. “That’s exactly right. Better to over-buy than under-buy. But didn’t Amanda hire a caterer?”

“She did,” I said slowly. “But unfortunately, she hired Erica Johnson.” I paused to see what her reaction would be.

Her eyebrows went up, and she nodded again. “So she stiffed you, too? I heard Erica is dead. Is it true? The rumors around town say that somebody put her on ice.” She chuckled. “Get it? Put her on ice? Stiffed?”

I couldn’t understand why people enjoyed making jokes about Erica’s death. I thought it was a terrible tragedy. “Well, yes, she died unexpectedly.”

“I know, I know, you can’t go into the details because your boyfriend, Ethan Banks, doesn’t want you spreading the news around town. But everyone already knows she died in the walk-in freezer at her shop.”

“That’s the thing about small towns, bad news travels fast.
